Flipping across the Ocean: nostalgia, matchmaking and displacement in Filipino American narrative.

The article addresses the nomadic nature of Filipino American social reality and how that is conveyed through a literature imbued with a peculiarly Filipino “exilic sensibility ”. The literary texts chosen to illustrate this hypothesis are Bienvenido Santos ’s What The Hell For You Left Your Heart In San Francisco (1987), as well as several short stories: N.V.M. González ’s “The Tomato Game ” (1993), Bienvenido Santos ’s “Immigration Blues ” (1979), Linda Ty-Casper ’s “Hills, Sky, Longing ” (1990), and Jessica Hagedorn ’s “The Blossoming of Bong Bong ” (1990). The fiction of Bienvenido Santos, N.V.M. González, and Ty-Casper, portray the nostalgia for an idealized homeland, especially through the oldtimers ’ and old people ’s perspective. Both Santos and González also tackle the question of green-card marriages between young Filipinas and oldtimers. On the other hand, Hagedorn ’s story and Santos ’s novel choose a young immigrant as the focal point who does not echo the elders ’ feeling of homesickness, displacement and exile

Propuesta del nuevo modelo didáctico aplicado en construcción

La presente comunicación se desarrolla como parte del Programa de Formación e Innovación Docente del Profesorado 2018. Se propone el Ciclo de Mejora Docente (CMD) en la asignatura de Construcción 2 perteneciente al Grado en Fundamentos de la Arquitectura de la Universidad de Sevilla. En esta asignatura, el carácter teórico-práctico de los objetivos docentes, presentan la oportunidad de aplicar esta experiencia, introduciendo un formato de clases más dinámico, en el que docente y estudiantes interactúen compartiendo la responsabilidad del aprendizaje. Durante el diseño del CMD propuesto, se profundiza en los contenidos esenciales y el desarrollo de las sesiones en el aula. Los resultados obtenidos muestran importantes mejoras en las calificaciones del estudiante. El diseño propuesto ha supuesto un importante avance no solo en la progresión del aprendizaje sino en la seguridad con que el estudiante se enfrenta a una prueba de evaluación, lo que ha llevado a considerar el éxito en esta primera convocatoria

Revisiting the Campo: A Biopolitical Reading of Perry Miyake’s 21st Century Manzanar

This article approaches Perry Miyake‟s 21st Century Manzanar, a recent example of neo-internment literature, from a biopolitical perspective. In his novel, Miyake revisits the history of Japanese American “internment” in a near future, when the US is waging an economic war against Japan and Japanese Americans are once more sent to concentration camps. I argue that, far from obfuscating the historical past, this novel teases out its less-obvious truths. First, racist profiling effectively places every single person of Japanese ancestry in a state of exception: as homo sacer, (s)he is beyond legal rights. Once in camp, having been reduced to nuda vita, the prisoners will submit to having their lives biopolitically “managed.” I conclude that 21st Century Manzanar acts both as an effective lens through which to re-interpret America‟s problematic past and as an astute warning against replicating such mistakes in the future.Este artículo aborda, desde una perspectiva biopolítica, la novela de Perry Miyake 21st Century Manzanar, un ejemplo reciente de neointernment literature. En dicha novela, Miyake retoma el “internamiento” de los japoneses americanos durante la segunda guerra mundial y lo traslada a un futuro próximo, en el que los Estados Unidos libran una guerra económica contra Japón y de nuevo los japoneses-americanos son enviados a campos de concentración. Lejos de tergiversar o enmascarar la realidad del fenómeno histórico, esta novela consigue sacar a la luz sus verdades más ocultas. En primer lugar, el sistema racista convierte a cualquier persona de ascendencia japonesa en un sospechoso y lo coloca un estado de excepción: en calidad de homo sacer, se mueve en un peculiar limbo legal. Ya en el campo de concentración, los prisioneros son reducidos a nuda vita y dicha vida es “gestionada” biopolíticamente. Esto me lleva a concluir que la perspectiva adoptada en 21st Century Manzanar nos permite reinterpretar, de una forma muy efectiva, el cuestionable pasado de los Estados Unidos, a la vez que sirve de advertencia para que evitemos repetir en el futuro los errores del pasado.MINECO FFI2015-66767-

Analysis of the use of the virtual environment for university teaching staff

Este trabajo estudia el uso que los docentes hacen de los entornos virtuales, centrándose en el de su propia universidad. Se pretende conocer cuál es la situación actual, para poder planificar las necesidades futuras de los docentes en su camino hacia el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior. Utilizamos como instrumento de recogida de información la entrevista personal para recoger las opiniones tanto de los docentes que utilizan el entorno virtual como aquellos que no lo utilizan. Se han realizado un total de 342 entrevistas que reflejan las opiniones docentes sobre las herramientas no presenciales que les facilitan su trabajo universitario. Los resultados de los datos nos indican que el 89.5% de los docentes dicen utilizar la plataforma universitaria virtual como apoyo de su trabajo, utilizan aquellos servicios que facilitan su docencia y su gestión administrativa. El entorno virtual está sin embargo muy infrautilizado en gran parte de su desarrollo y los docentes tampoco señalan como necesidad la utilización de otros entornos. Recogemos para finalizar los problemas y las mejoras que los docentes encuentran necesarias para usar las diferentes herramientas del entorno virtual.This article analyzes the use that the teachers of the University of Murcia do of the virtual environment SUMA. In the text the current situation is described with the aim to foresee the educational needs that will have the teachers inside the European Space for Higher Education. The opinion of the teachers who use the virtual environment, and teachers' opinion that they do not use the virtual environment, has been gathered by means of personal interviews (342). 89,5 % of the teachers uses the virtual environment as support to educational activity and use the services that facilitate the teaching and the administrative management. Nevertheless, the virtual environment is very little used. To conclude, there are gathered the improvements that the teachers believe necessary for the use of the tools of the virtual environment

Proposal and Comparative Study of Evolutionary Algorithms for Optimum Design of a Gear System

This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic framework using a Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Both algorithms are combined employing a collaborative strategy with sequential execution, which is called DE-NSGA-II. The DE-NSGA-II takes advantage of the exploration abilities of the multi-objective evolutionary algorithms strengthened with the ability to search global mono-objective optimum of DE, that enhances the capability of finding those extreme solutions of Pareto Optimal Front (POF) difficult to achieve. Numerous experiments and performance comparisons between different evolutionary algorithms were performed on a referent problem for the mono-objective and multi-objective literature, which consists of the design of a double reduction gear train. A preliminary study of the problem, solved in an exhaustive way, discovers the low density of solutions in the vicinity of the optimal solution (mono-objective case) as well as in some areas of the POF of potential interest to a decision maker (multi-objective case). This characteristic of the problem would explain the considerable difficulties for its resolution when exact methods and/or metaheuristics are used, especially in the multi-objective case. However, the DE-NSGA-II framework exceeds these difficulties and obtains the whole POF which significantly improves the few previous multi-objective studies.Fil: Méndez Babey, Máximo. Collaborative Work in Non-Present Situations

Presentamos algunos de los resultados obtenidos tras el estudio de dos experiencias educativas no presenciales. Dichas experiencias tuvieron lugar durante los cursos 2000 y 2002 con alumnos universitarios españoles. Nuestro principal objetivo era conocer cómo se trabaja en un entorno no presencial y qué relaciones interpersonales producen al trabajar de un modo colaborativo.We present some results obtained in the study of two on-line educative experiencies. They took place during the courses 2000 and 2002 with Spanish universitary students. Our main goal was to know both the way of working in a telematic network and the interpersonal relations motivated by the work in a collaborative style
